A Comprehensive Guide to Upgrading Your AWS EKS Cluster

Introduction

Upgrading your AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) cluster is essential to leverage the latest features, performance enhancements, and security patches. This guide walks through a step-by-step approach to execute upgrades safely, minimize disruption, and protect application uptime.

Review the Release Notes:

Before initiating the upgrade process, it is essential to carefully review the release notes provided by AWS. These release notes provide valuable information about new features, bug fixes, and changes introduced in the latest EKS version. Understanding these updates will enable you to assess their impact on your applications and make informed decisions throughout the upgrade process.

Plan Your Upgrade Strategy:

Developing a well-defined upgrade strategy is crucial to minimize downtime and ensure a smooth transition. Consider the following factors when planning your upgrade:

1

Cluster Backup: Before proceeding with the upgrade, it's recommended to take a backup of your EKS cluster configuration and state. This ensures that you can restore the cluster to its previous state in case any issues arise during the upgrade process.

2

Test Environment: Set up a test environment that closely resembles your production environment to simulate the upgrade process and validate the impact on your applications. This will help identify potential issues before applying the upgrade in the production environment.

3

Rolling Upgrade: AWS EKS supports a rolling upgrade approach, which allows you to upgrade individual nodes in your cluster without affecting the overall availability. This strategy ensures that your applications continue to run during the upgrade process.

Upgrade Process:

1

Upgrade Control Plane: Start the upgrade process by upgrading the EKS control plane. AWS automatically manages the control plane upgrades, and you can enable the managed upgrade feature to schedule and apply upgrades automatically during non-peak hours. This process typically takes around 10 minutes.

2

Upgrade Worker Nodes: After upgrading the control plane, it's time to upgrade the worker nodes in your cluster. Follow these steps:

—

Prepare for Upgrade: Before proceeding with the upgrade, ensure that your worker nodes are running a compatible version of the Kubernetes cluster control plane. You can utilize community AMIs provided by AWS for this purpose. To simplify the process, you can use the eksctl command-line tool or the AWS Management Console.

—

Create New Node Group: Create a new node group with the desired Kubernetes version and launch template or configuration. This ensures that your existing workloads continue running during the upgrade.

—

Drain and Terminate Old Nodes: Once the new node group is created and ready, use Kubernetes commands or tools like kubectl to drain and cordon the old nodes. This gracefully moves the workloads from the old nodes to the new ones. After ensuring all workloads are successfully migrated, terminate the old nodes.

—

Validate and Monitor: Validate that all the workloads are running smoothly on the new nodes. Monitor the cluster's health and performance to ensure everything is functioning as expected.

3

Testing and Validation: After completing the upgrade process, thoroughly test and validate your applications in the upgraded EKS cluster. Run extensive functional tests and performance benchmarks to ensure that the upgrade hasn't introduced any regressions or performance issues. This step is crucial before moving your applications back to the production environment.

Rollback Plan:

Although rare, unforeseen issues may occur during the upgrade process, leading to unexpected behaviour or disruptions in your applications. It's vital to have a well-defined rollback plan to revert to the previous cluster state quickly. Ensure you have a backup of the cluster and rollback procedures documented and tested in advance.

Conclusion:

Upgrading your AWS EKS cluster is an essential task to leverage the latest features and maintain a secure and high-performing environment.
