AWS Security Assessments: Unlocking Secrets for Your Account

Conducting a comprehensive security assessment for your AWS account is essential to safeguard the privacy, authenticity, and accessibility of your resources.

AWS Security Assessments: Unlocking Secrets for Your Account

Introduction

Conducting a security assessment for your AWS account is essential to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of your resources. This guide outlines a practical framework for evaluating your AWS security posture and addressing risk before it impacts critical workloads.

Objective:

To evaluate the security posture of an account, network, or organisation, identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses, and prevent potential risks.

The following factors should be considered when assessing:

Identity and Access Management (IAM) Review:

Implementing best practices for Identity and Access Management (IAM) is crucial for maintaining the security and integrity of your AWS environment.

  • —

Make sure that MFA is enabled for the root user and all IAM users to add an extra layer of security.

  • —

Verify that the principle of least privilege has been followed by granting users and roles only the necessary permissions to perform their specific tasks.

  • —

Ensure that access and secret keys are not created for the root user.

  • —

Ensure that access keys for IAM users are regularly rotated, and if the access keys are not used for a long time, delete those keys.

Network Management Review:

  • —

The best way to take control over your network security settings is to ensure that application workloads are not created in the default VPC.

  • —

As part of best practices, check whether VPC flow logs are created to gain visibility into all network traffic flowing into and out of the virtual infrastructure.

  • —

Re-evaluate security groups and ensure that port and protocol access is restricted.

  • —

Ensure that rules in NACLs are processed in order, and the first matching rule is applied. To prevent unintended access, place the most specific rules higher on the list.

  • —

Deploying a WAF can protect your web applications and APIs from exploits, cross-site scripting, and SQL injections if none is currently in place.

  • —

To prevent exposing back-end resource endpoints to the public, make sure VPC endpoints are used to enable communication between services in the private subnets.

  • —

Verify that SSL/TLS certificates are used to encrypt data in transit between the client and AWS services, as well as the encryption of data at rest using the AWS Key Management Service (KMS).

S3 Review:

  • —

Ensure that 'Block Public Access' is enabled for all buckets and allow public access only to specific buckets using bucket policies.

  • —

If you have AWS users with access to the buckets, make sure that versioning is enabled to recover an object from data loss or corruption.

  • —

The use of MFA delete is recommended for S3 buckets, which will provide an additional layer of protection against accidental or malicious deletions.

  • —

Verify that S3 buckets are encrypted so that an unauthorized person or entity cannot read them, even if they gain physical access to the device. This is especially important if the data is sensitive.

Monitoring Review:

  • —

Check whether the AWS CloudTrail is enabled to log all IAM events and roles, which provides visibility into user actions.

  • —

Verify that the CloudWatch alarms are set up to detect any API calls from unauthorized users or any unusual patterns of API calls.

Review Compliance and Auditing:

  • —

Evaluate your AWS account against industry-specific compliance requirements (e.g., PCI-DSS, HIPAA, GDPR). Examine AWS's compliance documentation and implement the necessary controls to ensure adherence to relevant regulations.

  • —

Conduct internal audits to verify compliance and identify areas for improvement.
